Important Characteristics Of A Bullet Camera

April 07 2013

The Bullet camera is the most popular security camera type sold today. It gets its name due to its cylinder or bullet shaped look. Bullet cameras have many characteristics that make them so popular. They are vandal proof, weatherproof, easy to install, and will mount just about anywhere. Many people often think they can see farther because of their shape and look, but this is really not true. The only difference between a bullet camera and any other camera type is its exterior housing. The internal camera of a bullet camera is the same camera parts you would find in a dome camera. But the bullet camera does offer some external parts that make it unique, simple, and easy to install.

Weatherproof Housing:

Bullet cameras are completely weatherproof! Their external housing makes them perfect for extreme weather conditions. Most high quality bullet cameras come with an IP66 rating which means they can withstand powerful streams of water hitting them constantly. No matter what part of the country you live in a bullet camera will give you full protection against heavy rains, strong winds, and even snow.

Vandal Proof Housing:

The vandal proof housing of a bullet camera gives you complete protection against vandalism. The housing protects the camera and its connections from being damaged or tampered with by employees or passing traffic. The housing also is made to protect the camera from an impact from objects possibly thrown at the camera. A vandal proof bullet camera will ensure your investment is protected and your camera continues to perform in any conditions.

The Mount:

The mounting mechanism of a bullet camera gives you complete flexibility for mounting it on any type of surface. Mounted from the rear end the bullet camera is then able to swivel in any direction so you can ensure you are securing any intended areas. Bullet cameras can be mounted on any walls, ceilings, and roof tops. The mounting component of a quality bullet camera also allows you to insert your video and power connections into the base so they are also protected and unable to be tampered with. The actual part of the bullet camera that mounts on a surface will also include an internal rubber ring that will ensure water and dust do not get into the base and affect the connections.

The Sun Visor:

Most quality bullet cameras also come with an adjustable sun visor that is used to guard the lens from sunlight. The visor is usually adjustable so you can move it forwards and backwards to give the camera more protection from sunlight.

The Adjustments:

Most professional grade bullet cameras offer a screw down lid that covers the location of the cameras adjustments. Most commonly adjustments are made with a joystick, dial, or simple to use buttons. This is where all the cameras features are managed and programmed. This includes lens adjustments, color adjustments, and all feature adjustments. These controls are always protected so only the person that manages the cameras has access to them.

The Cables:

All bullet cameras will have connections coming out of them. This is where you will attach the cables to deliver power and video from and to the camera. Most bullet cameras will have short RG59 coax cable lead coming out of them that has a female BNC connector on it.  This RG59 coax is used to deliver video signals from the camera to the DVR.   This is where you will attach your video cable that runs between the camera and the security DVR. You will also have a power lead coming out of the camera which will be used to deliver power from the camera power supply to the camera itself.

Summary:

Bullet cameras have all the vital characteristics needed for a successful outdoor security camera installation. Although many of them have different internal features and benefits, the external make-up is pretty much the same. The weatherproof and vandal proof characteristics will ensure durability and long lasting performance. Plus you get the other external characteristic like the sun visor, mounting mechanism, feature adjustments, and cable connections to support a fast installation.
