Choose Cabling Plus for Professional Grade BNC Connectors!

February 25 2014

Every CCTV system installation requires BNC connectors. This is the vital connector for attaching the RG59 coaxial cable to both the security camera and a security DVR. Although the BNC connector is a small part of the over-all system installation, it can play a major role in the performance and longevity of your system. The 2 most common types of BNC connectors on the market are compression and crimp types. Although the use of the “old school” crimp style BNC connectors is the cheapest solution, they may hinder the performance of your security cameras and the video quality they are capturing. At the end of the day it is important to use the professional grade BNC connectors that will do the job right!

When cabling for a security camera installation the best solution is to use an RG59 + 18/2 Siamese cable to deliver power and video between both the camera and security DVR. The 18-2 or 18 gauge 2 conductor power cable will be connected on one end to a power supply, while the other end will connect directly to the camera. The 18-2 cables sole purpose is to send the voltage from the power source to the camera. The RG59 coax part of the Siamese cable is used to deliver the surveillance video from the camera back to the security DVR. Once you have ran your cable between the cameras and the DVR you will have to then install a BNC connector onto both ends of the RG59 coaxial cable. By terminating male BNC connectors on the coaxial cable you are then able to easily connect the cable to the female BNC connectors that are found coming out of the camera and in the back of your DVR. The BNC connector will make all these video cable connections possible.

Although many people are still using the older style crimp connectors it is always recommended to use the newer compression style BNC connectors. The crimp BNC connectors are just crimped to the cable which means the metal on the connector is essentially crushed onto the cable. The end result can be too much room for moisture and dust to enter the termination. The long term result would be the connector will fail and then there is total video loss. A compression connector will provide a 360 degree compression clamp on the cable which means the termination is completely protected from the environment. The compression BNC connectors will also provide a much higher pull force which means the life span of the termination will be much longer. The truth is that 75% of security camera failures are connector related. So it is important to always use the BNC connectors that will protect the integrity of your connections, while ensuring high quality 24/7 video!
