Every security DVR provides a BNC input for each available security camera channel. So if you buy an 8 channel DVR you will be able to attach 8 cameras to the DVR. This also means you will have 8 female BNC inputs available for use. Each security camera you install will have an RG59 coaxial cable ran between it and the DVR. The coaxial cable will need a male BNC connector terminated onto it so it can connect it to the DVR channel. This is the same for the opposite end. The security camera will have a female BNC connector coming out of it at the end of a short cable. The male BNC connector on the RG59 coaxial cable will make your connections on both the DVR and the security camera side. So BNC connectors play a vital role in the performance of a surveillance system

Many people do not realize this but 75% of all security camera and CCTV system issues are connector related. The connectors are the first components that start to give which eventually causes cameras and video signals to fail, so there is no doubt that choosing a BNC connector that is built to last is crucial. In the old days all there was were crimp style BNC connectors. A crimp BNC connector is essentially a metal connector that includes the BNC head connection and a sleeve that is crimped to the cable. When crimping a connector to a cable you are using a crimping tool which basically crushes and deforms the metal sleeve onto the cable. The problem with crushing metal is that it is not a perfect connection, plus when crushing metal it leaves numerous openings where moisture and dust can enter the termination. Overtime not only does the metal loosen from the cable, but the moisture and dust that enters the connections start to hinder the performance of the cable.
