Use Modular Connectors to terminate all your network cables!

Modular connectors are commonly used when terminating telephone cables and network cables. Depending on the cable type you are terminating there are modular connectors available in RJ11, RJ12, RJ22, and RJ45 types. Each modular connector type has its own purpose depending on the connections you are trying to create. The type of modular connector you use is also determined by the network equipment you are creating the cables for. After a modular connector is crimped on the end of your cable it is ready to be plugged into your network device. The network devices or components that use a modular connector type include IP cameras, patch panels, telephones, computers, routers, hubs, network switches, or any other devices that are networkable. Most network devices have built-in female receptacles right on them that support the network connections you need. Once you have terminated your cables with modular connectors they are ready to be used to connect you devices to a network. An RJ45 modular connector is the most common connector type used in high speed voice and data network applications.

Most commonly, the type and size of cable you are using will drive the decision of which modular connector you use. The most important decision you can make is to choose the modular connector that is designed for the cable type you are using. There are numerous modular connectors available that work with flat, round, solid, or stranded network cables in various copper gauges. So it is important for you to choose the modular connector that is best suited for your network cable type.

At Cable Plus we offer a huge selection of modular connectors to support most voice and data applications. We offer traditional RJ-22, RJ-11, RJ-12, and RJ45 modular connectors that will terminate on any network or telephone cable types. We are also proud to offer the entire line of EZ-RJPRO modular connectors and crimping tools manufactured by Platinum Tools. Frequently Asked Questions About RJ45 Crimp Connectors - FAQ’s

What do I need to terminate my own network cables with modular connectors?

All you need in order to terminate your own network cables is a network cable stripper, modular crimp tool, and your bulk network cable. The most common network cables that are terminated with modular connectors are Cat5e cables, Cat 6 cables, and telephone cables.

If I am using shielded Cat5 cable do I need a special modular connector?

If you are using shielded Cat5e cables then you must also use a shielded Cat5 modular connector. This is important to ensure you have a complete end to end shielded solution. If you use standard Cat5e modular connector then the use of shielded Cat5e cable would be really worthless. To protect the integrity of your network installation, always use the modular connectors that are designed for the type of network cables you are installing.

What is the purpose of using strain relief boots with my modular connectors?

A strain relief boot has numerous purposes. Their most important purpose is to strengthen the connection between the modular connector and the network cable. The strain relief boots will take the strain off the network cables so you will have much longer lasting connections. Other purposes for the strain relief boots are to protect the terminations from dust or moisture that could cause the cables to underperform or just fail. Plus strain relief boots also look much cleaner and give your overall network installation a much more professional look. Although they are not mandatory it is best practice to install strain relief boots when terminating all your network cables.

Do you recommend the EZ-RJ45 connectors over the standard modular connector types?

Although both are just as effective, the EZ-RJ45 modular connectors are the most efficient to use, and will save you time and money. Sure they are more expensive, but they will cut the time to terminate a network cable in half, plus having the ability to accurately line up the cables in the connector before terminating ensures that each termination is perfect, and there is no waste, or bad terminations that have to be re-done. The EZ modular connectors are available for terminating Cat5e, Cat 6, and RJ11/12 modular connectors. They are also available in shielded types to support Cat5e and Cat 6 shielded network applications.

Do I need a special tool to terminate the EZ modular connectors?

Yes. The only tool that works with the EZ modular connectors is the Platinum Tools 100054C EZ-RJPRO HD Crimp Tool. The 100054C will support the entire line EZ modular connectors in both shielded and non-shielded types. Plus it will allow you to terminate even the traditional modular connectors if you still have some and you want to use your last available stock.
