Security DVR: Get the most out of your system!

February 08 2013

Most people seem to think that their security DVR is there for one purpose and one purpose only – to record the images that their CCTV cameras pick up. This really is not the case though with most of the models out there, as they have a huge heap of different features that can be used to turn a security DVR from a simple recording device to a multi-purpose security solution!

Before we even begin to talk about ways that you can increase the use of your security DVR though, it is essential that you choose the correct one! A security DVR can come in a massive variety of shapes, sizes, and prices, so all of these must be taken into consideration. Different options such as the capacity, number of cameras it can record simultaneously, the ability to create DVDs, support motion detection, and resolution are all things that must be taken into account. For this reason, you should decide what your CCTV system is going to be used for and match your specifications to those of the most appropriate DVR.

So, now that you have a security DVR, what are the different ways that you can make it better? Well, the first important thing to do is to ensure that you set the correct frame rate, as this will affect the amount of recording time that the security DVR has. The frame rate basically tells the DVR how many images it should take per second, with less images leading to lower quality recorded footage. The human eye sees at 25 frames per second, so this is the maximum you will need - although the best balance between clarity and recording time is gained at about the 10 frames per second marker. To further increase the length of recording, set the security DVR to overwrite data after a set amount of time. Also, by setting your DVR and cameras will also save you much valuable hard drive space. Your system will never miss an event. Basically, one the camera detects motion in an area the system will go back a few seconds and ensure the entire event is saved.

After this has been done, it is time to add all of the bells and whistles to the system; this however depends on the features that the security DVR supports. Alarms, motion sensors and trigger outputs are all common features when it comes to a DVR, so there is no point in not using them, is there? One thing must be said about motion sensors though; if the cameras are in an area of high footfall, you might be wise to disable this. This is because the camera will be constantly moving all over the place due to the large amount of movement that it picks up!

It is also important to protect your security DVR and although this won’t affect the way in which it works every single day, you will be glad you did if something happens! It is a great idea to connect the security DVR up to a surge protector (otherwise known as a UPS), to ensure that it isn’t damaged by loss of power or conversely by too much power. It is also important to make your DVR tamper proof by implanting passwords, so as to ensure that data is not deleted by others – either intentionally or unintentionally.

The security DVR is the heart of your surveillance system. It is a powerful device that has numerous features to support various applications. The key is setting it up to best support your needs. Why not make sure your security DVR is as effective as possible.
