RG59 Coaxial Cable will support all your critical video applications!
RG59 coaxial cable is a specific coaxial cable type that is most popular for carrying low power video and RF signals between electronic video components. RG59 coaxial cable is used every day to support the connection of home theater products, but it is most commonly used as a video cable when installing surveillance cameras. Essentially the RG59 coaxial cable is the pipe that delivers the video signal from the security camera back to the security DVR (Digital Video Recorder). RG59 coaxial cable is a simple one conductor cable that’s main feature is the ability to support applications where an extremely high bandwidth is required.
The construction of a RG59 coaxial cable is not at all complex. At the center of a coaxial cable is a 20 gauge center conductor which is usually a solid (or sometimes stranded) copper core. The copper center conductor is surrounded by a gas injected foam insulation that looks a lot like hard plastic. The insulation is surrounded by a foil and/or mesh copper braid for shielding purposes. The final piece of an RG59 coaxial is a PVC jacket that holds it all together. RG59 coaxial cable is know for being very easy to work with, simple to terminate, and very durable.
In a CCTV camera installation the RG59 coaxial cable is usually terminated with a BNC connector on both ends. Most commonly, both the security DVR and security cameras come equipped with built-in female BNC connectors. These BNC connectors are used to attach the terminated RG59 coaxial cable to them. A BNC connector is fairly easy to terminate and features a locking mechanism that assists in creating a strong, secure, long lasting connection. In the past, during a CCTV system installation installers were forced to run two separate cables to each camera. These two cables would be the power cable and the RG59 coaxial cable for video. Running two separate cables meant more work and a tougher installation. To make a surveillance system installation much faster and easier a Siamese cable was introduced to the industry. A Siamese cable for CCTV is an RG59 coaxial cable and an 18/2 power cable that are attached together to create one simple to pull and easy to install cable. Usually a Siamese CCTV cable is designed with both the coax and the power cable stuck together side by side. This allows the installer to easily peel them apart (like a banana peel) prior to terminating them, and connecting them to a DVR (Digital Video Recorder), CCTV camera power supply, or security camera.
There are times when a Siamese cable just does not fit an application. Since the two cables are stuck together it only makes sense to use Siamese cable when installing a DVR and power supply in the same location, or at least in close proximity of one another. Often due to power limitations in long cable runs an installer is forced to put the power at the camera location, or at another location other than where the DVR is located. In this application the RG59 coaxial cable would be ran to one location, and the 18/2 power cable would be ran to a completely different location. In this situation it would not be possible to use a Siamese CCTV cable. Since both cables are connected you would have to peel the cables entirely apart before installing. For this type of application it would be best to use a separate box of RG59 coaxial cable, and a separate box of multi-conductor cable for power. This will give you the flexibility to run each cable to any location needed.
It is always important to buy an RG59 coaxial cable that is well constructed and made with the best materials. There is no reason to allow cheap, poorly made coaxial cables hinder the performance of your cameras or home theater components. The best RG59 coaxial cable usually provides clear documentation of its specifications either directly on the cable jacket or on the box. The best RG59 coaxial cable is 3 GHz tested, and includes a 95% copper braid, 20 gauge copper center conductor, and a CMP/CMR/CM rating. A riser rating (CMR) is commonly required when cables are run between floors through open vertical shafts. A CMR rating proves the cable has been tested and is safe for in-wall installations. We always recommend that you follow your local building codes and use the cables that best support them. If you are running RG59 in a plenum rated ceiling you will want to make sure again you are following the building codes by using a plenum rated (CMP) cable. Before buying any bulk cable products you should always look at the specifications and ensure it has some of the basic characteristics that are common in a good quality RG59 coaxial cable. Also, make sure the cable has the ratings and certifications needed to support your installation.
At Cabling Plus we offer a huge selection of professional grade RG59 cables that will support any home theater or CCTV installation. We offer RG59 coaxial cable in both single cable and Siamese cable versions to support any installations type. We even offer the RG59 coaxial cable options that are needed for any indoor, outdoor, direct burial, or plenum rated video applications. Let us provide you with the RG59 coaxial cable needed to ensure your installations are 100% successful!
When should I use RG59 Coaxial Cable?
RG59 coaxial cable is the most commonly used cable for CCTV camera installations. It is the cable type best used to deliver video signals from the security cameras back to the security DVR. RG59 coaxial cable is also commonly used to make interconnect cables used in home theater and commercial A/V applications.
What kind of connectors do I need for RG59 coaxial cable?
It all depends on the connections you are trying to create. But there are numerous connector types available to support RG59 coaxial cable. The most popular connectors used to terminate RG59 coaxial cable are BNC, RCA, and F type connectors. The important thing is to buy the connector type that is designed for your cable type. Match these two together and you will have a successful installation.
What types of RG59 coaxial cables are available?
The most common types of RG59 coaxial cables are CMP (plenum rated), CM (general purpose), CMR (riser rated), and direct burial rated. As you can tell there are numerous RG59 coaxial cable types available to support various installation applications. Although the CMR rated RG59 coaxial cable is the most commonly used RG59 type in both residential and commercial installations, it is important to always follow your local building codes and install the right cable type that supports them.
How do I prepare RG59 coaxial cable to be terminated?
Rg59 coaxial cable is very easy to strip and terminate. To prepare it the right way prior to terminating a crimp or compression connector on it you will need a good RG59 coaxial cable stripper. We highly recommend using the Cable Pro PAS59/6 coax stripper to prepare both RG6 and RG59 cables. The PSA59/6 features a simple dial that allows you to move from RG6 to RG59 without having to reach for the tool bag!
What is CMP or Plenum Rated RG59 coaxial cable?
The plenum rating (CMP) signifies the RG59 coaxial cable has passed stringent burn testing and is suitable for installation into Air Plenum spaces. Plenum rated cables feature specially treated cable jackets that combat possible toxins from negatively harming people in the case of a fire and the cable is burned. A plenum space is simply any enclosed space within a building that is used for airflow. Since the cable is being ran in this open air flow system the cable must be CMP rated. A quality CMP or plenum rated RG59 coaxial cable will have this rating clearly marked on the box, in the specifications, and right on the cable jacket.
What distance can I send a CCTV video signal over RG59 coaxial cable?
If you are using a standard 20 gauge center conductor, RG59 coaxial cable then you can easily send a video signal up to 1500 feet. RG59 coaxial cable is famous for its ability to support long distance high quality video cable runs.
Do I need a special RG59 coaxial cable for outdoor installations?
Standard RG59 coaxial cable features a very durable jacket that has no problem withstanding the environment. So when it comes to rain, snow, and sunlight you are covered. But if you plan on burying it in the ground it is best practice to not only install the cable in conduit, but also use direct burial rated RG59 cable.
